POULTRY KEEPERS URGED TO HELP HENS BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER
Rising temperatures are prompting backyard poultry keepers to take extra steps to keep birds cool, healthy and comfortable this summer.
Unlike humans, chickens cannot sweat to regulate their body temperature, instead, relying on other mechanisms to lose heat, making them particularly vulnerable during periods of prolonged hot weather.
“Chickens have a normal body temperature of around 41°C (105°F), which is significantly higher than our own,” explains Nettex Poultry Specialist Serena Kidd. “They use their comb and wattles as a heat sink to help regulate their body temperature, but during very warm conditions they can quickly become stressed if they don’t have access to cool water, shade and good airflow.”
One of the most effective ways to support birds during hot weather is by ensuring they have constant access to cool, fresh drinking water.
“Hydration is absolutely critical,” says Serena. “Adding freezer blocks in drinkers can help keep water cooler for longer, particularly during the hottest parts of the day. However, avoid adding ice cubes directly to the water, as sudden temperature changes can discourage birds from drinking.”
For free-ranging flocks, access to shade is essential. Natural shade from trees and hedgerows is ideal, while camouflage netting around the coop or run can provide additional protection from direct sunlight without restricting airflow. In particularly hot conditions, lightly misting shaded areas with a hose can also help create cooler resting spots for birds.
Good ventilation within poultry housing is equally important. Serena advises poultry keepers to ensure there is adequate airflow within coops, particularly above head height, to help remove excess heat and prevent ammonia build-up.
“Poor ventilation can lead to ammonia accumulating within the housing, which can irritate the birds’ airways and increase the risk of respiratory issues,” she explains. “The aim is to create a steady flow of fresh air without causing draughts where birds are roosting.”
Freezer blocks placed beneath roosting bars can also help lower temperatures within the coop and provide relief during warm nights.
Alongside heat management, summer is an important time to focus on coop hygiene, with warm weather accelerating the build-up of bacteria, parasites and flies, particularly in damp or poorly maintained housing.
“Regular cleaning is essential throughout the summer months,” says Serena. “Removing soiled bedding, cleaning drinkers and feeders frequently with a safe product, such as Nettex Poultry Sanitiser and Egg Wash, and maintaining dry housing can all help reduce disease pressure and create a healthier environment for your birds.”
Nettex offers a range of poultry health and husbandry products designed to support birds throughout the summer season. From nutritional supplements that help support health and wellbeing during periods of stress, to hygiene and parasite-control products that help maintain clean housing, poultry keepers can take proactive steps to help their flocks thrive despite the challenges of warmer weather.
“Summer should be an enjoyable time for both poultry keepers and their birds,” adds Serena. “With a few simple management adjustments and a focus on hydration, ventilation and hygiene, poultry keepers can help ensure their hens remain healthy, comfortable and productive all season long.”
