So advises Alltech in a new series of technical bulletins that provide essential best practice guidelines on both of these increasingly popular crop-harvesting methods. “Whilst it is important that wholecrop or crimped cereals are grown from the start with the highest standards of agronomy, it is the final days around harvest that often impact most significantly on feed value,” says Alltech’s forage product manager Matthew Smith. “In order to achieve target dry matters of 35-45% (of the whole plant) and 65-70% (of the grain) for wholecrop and crimped grain respectively, it is important to monitor crops regularly from 2-3 weeks after ear emergence; once grain has started to fill, check crops at least every other day and take samples that reflect the whole field situation. “Both wholecrop and crimped cereals require a proven and effective additive to minimise wastage and ensure as much of the original feed value is retained in the clamp. Sil-All Fireguard is a combination of lactic bacteria and organic salts and has been shown at independent research institutes such as IGER to promote a fast and effective fermentation and suppress the growth of moulds and yeasts responsible for spoilage in the clamp. “Sil-All Fireguard is effective for both wholecrop and crimped grain and, used alongside good clamp management and effective compaction, it will significantly improve aerobic stability and improve dry matter recovery when compared with an untreated equivalent. It is also easy to apply and requires fewer precautions in use than conventional acid treatments, for example.” Alltech’s technical bulletins covering wholecrop and crimped cereals harvesting and clamp management practices can be obtained free of charge from Alltech UK by calling 01780 764512.
